LEWISTON, Maine – An eighteen point night from Michael Thorpe wasn't enough in the Bates Tip-Off Tournament Saturday as the Emerson Men's Basketball Team fell 66-53 to Bates in the Championship Game. With the loss Emerson is now 1-1 on the year as Bates moves to 2-0.
The first half saw the Lions hang tough with the Bobcats with EC posting 38% from the floor to Bates' 31%. Michael Thorpe was unstoppable in the half, leading both teams with 16 points alone, shooting .500 from the floor and beyond the arc.
The Bobcats tripped up the Lions with their offensive boards in the first half though as they scored nine points off second chances, while seeing their bench jump in to score 11 points to bolster Bates to a 32-28 lead at the half.
The Bobcats turned up the D in the second half though, zoning in on Thorpe to keep him at bay with two points in the half. Ed Bogdanovich stepped up for the Bobcats with 12 points in the half as Bates pounded in the paint with 24 points inside the blocks.
The Bobcats were powerhouses on the offensive boards again as they scored 11 points this time around in second chance points. Jon Goldberg stepped up for the Lions though on points with 11 as he went 5-for-6. EC's defense just couldn't hold the line in the end though as Bates took off with a 66-53 final.
The Lions will take to the court again this Tuesday as they travel to take on Wheaton. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Norton, Mass.
