BOSTON - Coming off a comeback 99-83 triumph at Newbury to open up their season, the Emerson men's basketball team looks to continue its winning ways at home and on the road this upcoming week. On Tuesday night, the Lions welcome the neighboring Suffolk Rams in its home opener at 7:30 p.m. After the holiday, Emerson embarks on tournament action in the UMass Boston Harbor Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Lions will face Bridgewater State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then return to the hardwood on Saturday with the team and time to be announced at a later date.

 

STARTING FRESH

  • Backed by junior Geoffrey Gray's (Newton, Mass.) first career triple-double, Emerson tipped off the 2017-2018 season with a 99-83 win at Newbury.

  • The Lions also had help from senior Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.), who added 22 points shooting 7-for-14 from the floor and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and senior John Geary (Duxbury, Mass.), who canned nine of his 11 points from beyond the arc.

  • Sophomore Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.) also contributed 18 points off the bench.



GRAY MAKES HISTORY AT NEWBURY

  • Gray notched the first triple-double in men's basketball program history in Emerson's win at Newbury and earned him the NEWMAC Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week as announced on Monday afternoon.

  • Gray led Emerson to victory as he produced 29 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on the day.

  • The Offensive Player of the Week is a first for Gray, who was named Defensive Player of the Week in this past February.

 

BEANTOWN BATTLE

  • Suffolk heads across the Boston Common for a non-conference meeting with Emerson on Tuesday night, which will be the 37th meeting between the two teams.

  • The Rams start off the young season with a record of 1-2 and are coming off an 82-74 setback in the conclusion of the Williams Tip-Off Tournament this past Saturday.

  • Overall, Emerson commands the all-time series, 28-8 and edged out Suffolk 78-72 in last season's meeting back on November 22, 2016, where Sheng dropped 30 points.

  • Thomas Duffy anchors the Rams offense with 23.7 points per game and is shooting 50% from the floor and connects with 62.5% of his shots from beyond the three-point line.

  • Michael Hagopian follows Duffy with 10.0 points per game, with Jim Djema and Georgia Grillakis contributing 9.7 and 9.3 points per game, respectively.

 

SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Bridgewater State currently holds a record of 1-2 through its first three contests and is coming off an 85-78 setback in the North Country Invitational championship game to Potsdamn on Saturday.

  • On average, the Bears are putting up 65.3 points per game and are shooting 42.2% on the hardwood, 24.1% from beyond the arc and 76.8% at the charity stripe.

  • Pacing the Bridgewater State offense is Rocky DeAndrade and Rayshon Ward, who both average double figures in points per game at 16.0.
