Weekly Preview - Three Match Schedule in Five Days for Women's Volleyball

BOSTON - Coming off a 1-1 week, the Emerson women's volleyball team comes off the long weekend with a trio of matches, including two games on the road and one at home. Emerson starts the week off on the road and head off to Smith for a NEWMAC tilt at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lions return home on Friday as they host Simmons for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference match before they head across town to Wentworth on Saturday for an 11:00 p.m. match.

 

A WEEK IN REVIEW

  • Emerson finished 1-1 through its two matches last week to move its record back to .500 at 9-9 overall and put its conference record at 2-5.

  • The Lions started the week off on Tuesday with a 3-0 setback at the hands of Wheaton (Mass.) before they rebounded with a non-conference sweep at Bridgewater State on Thursday.

 

LIONS IN THE NEWMAC

  • Freshman Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) continues to rank among the top five within her respective NEWMAC categories, including kills per set and kills.

  • Tepper sits in fourth with 3.56 kills per set while she comes in the fifth spot with 210 total swings.

  • Junior Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) comes in fifth in both assists per set (8.34) and assists (509).

  • Sophomore Kayleen Bertrand (New Boston, N.H.) has served 31 aces through 18 matches, ranking her tied for fifth within the NEWMAC.

  • Tied for the eighth spot in digs is junior Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.), who has racked up 234 digs.

 

ALEXANDER NABS LION OF THE WEEK HONOR

  • With Cohen earning Lion of the Week honors to wrap up September action, women's volleyball snags a share of the accolade for the second week in a row with freshman Albany Alexander (Orlando, Fl.) nabbing the honor.

  • In Emerson's 3-0 win over Bridgewater State last Thursday night, Alexander contributed a season-best 10 swings for the Lions, her first double-digit kills performance.


SCOUTING THE PIONEERS

  • Entering Tuesday's match, Smith holds a record of 7-11 and are still in search of a win against NEWMAC opponents with a record of 0-7.

  • The Pioneers are coming off a straight sweep loss at the hands of Clark University this past Friday.

  • In last season's meeting on September 27, 2016, Emerson bested Smith in three straight sets at home.


SCOUTING THE SHARKS

  • Simmons is currently riding a three-game win streak to put their record at 12-9 and a GNAC record of 6-1.

  • The winners of their last three matches, the Sharks had a pair of victories comes in a tri-match sweep over conference foes, Rivier and Norwich, this past Saturday.  

  • Simmons last hosted Emerson in tri-match play on October 1, 2016, where the Lions edged out the Sharks in five sets at 3-2.

 

SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS

  • Piecing together a win streak of six consecutive matches, Wentworth brings a record of 19-2 and Commonwealth Coast Conference record of 3-1 to its matchup against Emerson on Saturday.

  • The Leopards last win came this past Saturday as they took a non-conference tri-match sweep over Rhode Island College and Mass. Maritime.

  • Wentworth remains at home for a pair of contests on Tuesday against Gordon and welcome Suffolk on Thursday before hosting Emerson.

  • Saturday's meeting will be the first time Emerson and Wentworth have faced one another since September 14, 2013, where the Lions took the 3-0 victory.
