Weekly Preview: Men's Soccer Splits Home & Away Action To Start 2018 Schedule

BOSTON, Mass.
- On the cusp of wrapping its 2017 season with a 1-0 NEWMAC shutout over MIT, the Emerson College men's soccer team enters 2018 hoping to carry momentum into its opening weekend. Emerson breaks in the brand new turf at Rotch Field under the lights on Friday against the visiting Pine Manor at 6:00 p.m. Then on Sunday afternoon, the Lions make the trek across Boston for a 2:00 p.m. meeting with Emmanuel (Mass.). 


REWIND TO 2017 

  • The 2017 campaign saw Emerson cap its first season under the helm of head coach Bryan Harkin with an overall record of 5-10-2 and 1-6 when facing NEWMAC opponents. 
  • Despite a lone NEWMAC win last season, the Lions captured its first NEWMAC win in program history over the MIT Engineers back on October 28, 2017 in a dramatic 1-0 victory. 
  • Junior Gavin Faucette's (Oakland, Calif.) team leading eight nets tied for third within NEWMAC scorers and placed within the top-10 of two conference categories, including a NEWMAC leading 68 shots and 16 total points to put him in eighth.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS 

  • Like the women's soccer team, men's soccer will also face Emmanuel (Mass.) this upcoming weekend as the Saints finished its 2017 season at 3-9-2 with a 3-2-5 record within the GNAC.
  • Emmanuel (Mass.) reached the GNAC Tournament Quarterfinal round, but were topped, 2-0, by Norwich University to close its campaign. 
  • The Saints and Lions met back in the beginning of 2017 on September 2 where the Lions edged past the visiting Saints, 2-1. 
  • Key returners to the Saints include William Burdick, who put in a Saints best five goals in 2017 and Cameron Messier, who followed with six helpers. 

 

SCOUTING THE GATORS 

  • In its first meeting with Emerson come Friday night, Pine Manor enters 2018 as the reigning ACAA Champions after a season that saw the Gators finish 12-5-1. 
  • Returning to the Gators in 2018 is Jose Corrales, who knocked in a team leading 12 nets last season to go along with three assists for a total of 27 points, along with Diego Herrera, who was credited with eight assists.
