Mens Volleyball Controls Match For Fourth Straight Sweep

THE BASICS

The Lead: Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.) recorded 13 kills Lucas Raagas (Cambridge, Mass.) and Josh Elliot (Swedesboro, N.J.) combined for 31 assists as Emerson swept the York College Cardinals 3-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Piorkowski added 10 digs to his 22 kills, with four service aces and one block. He had a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Jacob DiTore (Salem N.H.) had 10 digs as well.
  • Elliot had 17 assists with Raagas almost matching him with 14. Raagas added four serrive aces and Elliot added two kills. 
  • Philton Paul led all Cardinals players with six kills.  Gustavo Villanueva had 10 digs, tying for a game high.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The lions started out the match on a 6-1 run, and the trend remained throughout the match.
  • The Lions opened up a 10 point lead in the first set on Raagas' first ace at 14-4.
  • Emerson only allowed York to get four more points in the set, closing it out at 25-8 on a Piorkowski kill.
  • The second set started 2-2, before Piorkowski took the serve.  The Lions scored the next 15 points, opening up a commanding 17-2 lead.
  • York made a small run, cutting the lead to 11 at 21-10, but the Lions closed on the set on another Piorkowski kill, 25-12.
  • The second set started out much closer, with the teams splitting the first twelve points.
  • Emerson took control after the tie, closing out the match while only allowing York to score five more points.
  • Matt Connolly (Haverhill, Mass.) closed out the game with a kill, giving Emerson the 3-0 victory.
