The Lead: The Emerson softball suffered a pair of losses to the Meredith College Angels and Coe College Hawks as Citrus Games action continued for the Lions on Wednesday afternoon. In the first game, the Lions were bested 7-3 by the Angels. The Lions then fell to the Hawks, 11-1, in the second game of the day. 

 

GAME ONE: Meredith 7, Emerson 3

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Sophomore Caroline Fortuna (Higganum. Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while sophomores Kodie Cash (Big Bear City, Calif) and Alena Jones (Woodinville, Wash.) and junior Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, Conn.) scored a combined three runs and one double. 
  • Freshman pitcher Keely Marquez (La Verne, Calif.) fell to 0-2 in the loss as she surrendered five runs (two earned) on seven hits. 
  • Junior Casey Tsamis (Colchester, Conn.) pitched an inning of relief and allowed two runs on a pair of hits. 
  • Sarah Watson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, Erica Occena finished 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs as Alyssa D'Arco and Julia Allsbrook went for a combined 3-for-6 at the plate for Meredith with a double, one run scored and two RBIs. 
  • Julia Cerasi moved to 3-2 and earned the win with a complete game as she held the Emerson bats to three runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out four. 
  • Meredith held the 9-5 hit advantage over Emerson, while the Lions and Angels each left five runners on the bags. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  •  Meredith grabbed the game's first run in the bottom of the second as D'Arco belted a double into left field to score Ellen Blevins as the Angels went up 1-0. 
  • Emerson answered in its half of the third with a pair of runs to go in front 2-1 after Fortuna sent a two RBI double to left field. 
  • The Lions committed two errors within the bottom of the fourth and allowed the Angels to tack on the equalizer at 2-all. 
  • With one out and the bases full of Angels, S Watson crossed home the tying run on a passed ball by the catcher. 
  • Emerson's defensive woes carried into the bottom of the sixth and allowed Meredith to add five more runs on the board behind three errors and four hits to extend its lead to 7-2. 
  • The Lions created some life for themselves within the bottom of the seventh frame after freshman Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.) and junior Molly Goldstein (Ridgefield, Conn.) both reached on a single and double. 
  • After Jones reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, Dix plated the third and final Emerson run to put the score at 7-3 as the game concluded on an unassisted out at second. 

 

 

GAME TWO - Coe 11, Emerson 1 (6 innings) 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • DeFusco paced the Emerson offense and finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a double, while Cash went 1-for-3 with a single and one run scored. 
  • Allie O'Brien led Coe going 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, one run scored and a pair of RBIs, while Kasiah Ehresman and Brenna Winn went for a combined 2-for-5 for the Hawks with four runs scored and one RBI. 
  • Freshman Erin Nolan (Hunterdon, N.J.) started on the mound for Emerson and took the loss with 1.1 innings pitched and allowed five runs (two earned) on two hits as she walked three batters and struck out one. 
  • Tsamis relived Nolan for 4.2 innings and surrendered six runs (three earned) on six hits. 
  • Alyssa Olsen (5-0) pitched six innings in the win for Coe and allowed just one run one six hits while she punched out three batters. 
  • Coe outhit Emerson, 8-6, while the Lions left six runners on the bags and the Hawks stranded eight on the bases. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Coe did its damage early as they capitalized got to Nolan and Tsamis for eight runs that were stretched through the first three innings to take a lengthy 8-1 lead over Emerson.
  • With the 5-0 lead going in Coe's favor after two innings, Emerson cashed in its lone run in the bottom of the second after Cash plated on an error by the shortstop and cut the deficit to four at 5-1. 
  • Tsamis was able to keep Emerson in the game as she held the Coe bats scoreless through the fourth and fifth frames.
  • However, the Hawks got to Tsamis for a trio of runs within the top of the sixth to extend its advantage to 11-1. 
  • After Ashley Heims plated on an error by the second base man, Coe had runners on the corners and saw both Brianna Gardner and Ehresman score on a sacrifice fly into center by Winn and grounder to third by Repp. 
  • DeFusco kicked off the bottom half of the sixth for Emerson with a single into left before a double play and pop up to short closed out the 11-1 loss. 

 

UP NEXT 

  • Emerson heads back onto the diamond on Thursday, March 9 in doubleheader action against Staten Island at 1:15 p.m. and Thiel at 3:00 p.m. 
  • Meredith closes out Citrus Classic action on March 9 as well with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. against Simmons and a 3:30 game versus St. Joseph's (Me.). 
  • Coe will face Simmons and St. John Fisher tomorrow, March 9, with the first game slated to begin at 12:15 p.m. and the second game at 2:30 p.m.
