The Lead: The Emerson softball team were topped on both sides of its doubleheader against the visiting Babson Beavers on Friday afternoon. Within the first game of the day, Emerson was blanked, 10-0, in six innings. The Lions rallied from a 10-run deficit with a nine runs through the fourth and fifth frames, but were bested 13-9 in the nightcap. 


Game One: Babson 10, Emerson 0 (6 innings)


  • Babson crossed three runs through the second and third frames to claim a 3-0 lead over Emerson. 
  • Josephine Mares smacked a double up the middle to advance Annie Mitchell home for Babson's first run in the top of the first. 
  • Within the Beavers half of the second, Ashley Tango and Meaghan Merullo batted back-to-back RBI singles up the middle to extend their lead to three. 
  • Leslie Moore sent a double into the right center gap that drove in both Victoria Casey and Mares for the next pair of Babson runs to push its lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
  • Babson tagged freshman Erin Nolan (Hunterdon, N.J.) for five runs within the top of the sixth inning to pull in front to a commanding 10-0 lead over Emerson. 
  • Samantha Smith drove in a pair after she batted a two-run single up the middle before Mitchell cleared the bags with a three-run triple into right center. 
  • DeFranco notched a two-out sixth inning single, just the second allowed by Reilly, but Reilly was able to get the Lions to ground to second to conclude the game.



  • DeFranco finished 1-for-3 at the plate and sophomore Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) went 1-for-2 for Emerson. 
  • Marquez tossed the first four innings and surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits 
  • Casey - 2 for 4 with four walks. 
  • Nolan was on the mound for the fifth and sixth frames where she gave up five earned runs on four hits to match four walks and one strikeout. 
  • Casey, Moore and Mitchell all finished 2-for-4 for Babson, while Casey and Moore each plated a pair of runs and Mitchell notched three RBIs. 
  • Reilly shut down the Emerson bats through six innings and surrendered just two hits while she fanned 10. 



Game Two: Babson 13, Emerson 9



  • Babson crossed home nine times the first and second frames to claim the 9-0 lead over Emerson.
  • Mares came around the score on a passed ball for the first run that was followed up by a double from Moore and Tango's single to center to bring in two more runs. 
  • Merullo grounded to second to bring in Tango for the fourth run of the inning before Mitchell batted an RBI double into left. 
  • The Beavers added a four-run top of the second to extend their lead over the Lions to 9-0 that was backed by Smith's three RBI triple and Merullo's RBI grounder to second. 
  • After Babson crossed the 10th run in the top of the third on Casey's RBI double into left, Emerson answered with nine runs through the fourth and fifth innings to erase its 10-0 deficit and cut the lead to one at 10-9.
  • Emerson's four-run fourth kicked off with Leonardos sending her eighth homer of the year into center to put the Lions on the board. 
  • Junior Katie Hill's (Canton, Conn.) sacrifice fly made its way into right to plate the second run that was followed by senior Shelby Carney's (North Reading, Mass.) two-run RBI double into left as the inning wrapped with Carney scoring on a miscue at third. 
  • A five-run fifth for the Lions began with an RBI single into center from sophomore Caroline Fortuna (Higganum, Conn.) and Carney drawing a bases-loaded walk to score junior Jillian Gearin (Hermosa Beach, Calif.)
  • DeFranco smacked a two-run single into the outfield that scored both Fortuna and Hill to bring the Lions within one to conclude the inning. 
  • Casey was responsible for the final three Babson runs that ultimately pushed the Beavers in front, 13-9. 
  • Casey tripled into right to bring in Mares for the 11-9 insurance run before she scored on a wild pitch in the sixth before she doubled in the 13th and final run in the seventh. 



  • Leonardos went 2-for-4 in the batter's box for Emerson with a homer, two runs crossed and one RBI. 
  • Gearin went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles and scored one run. 
  • Emerson junior starter Kodie Cash (Big Bear City, Calif.) earned the no decision after she allowed nine runs to cross (seven earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts through 1.1 innings.
  • DeFranco, who pitched the middle four frames, was tagged with the loss after she surrendered three runs on four hits with a walk and fanned three batters. 
  • Marquez wrapped up the final 1.2 innings and allowed three hits with one run to match a strikeout and walk. 
  • Casey finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the visitors with two double, triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. 
  • Mares also finished 3-for-4 with two triples, four runs scored and Smith went 2-for-3 with a triple,  a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. 
  • Stock started the first 4.1 frames and was credited with the win where she gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits on three walks and four strikeouts. 
  • Reilly faced 15 batters to earn her second save of the season and allowed a pair of runs to cross on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. 



  • Emerson wrap up its 2017 home schedule tomorrow, Saturday, April 15 with a pair of NEWMAC games against Smith with the first game slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
  • Babson returns home for Saturday action as well to entertain Springfield for a pair of NEWMAC tilts beginning at 12:00 p.m.
