Softball Picks Up Sweep At New England College

The Lead: Freshman Maddie Tomich (Lithia, Fla.) belted a pair of homers along with five RBIs in a combined 4-for-7 day at the plate in the Emerson softball team's non conference twin-bill sweep over New England College on Wednesday afternoon. 

 

GAME ONE: Emerson 12, New England College 1 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

IN THE BOX 

  • Tomich powered Emerson at the plate in a 3-for-4 effort that included a double, home run, five RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. 
  • Along with Tomich, freshman Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.), junior Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) and senior Jill Gearin (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) also collected three hits apiece. 
  • Destiny Helmedach led New England College and finished 2-for-3 on a double and run scored while Joslyn Gallagher had one RBI. 


ON THE MOUND 

  • Eddleston allowed just one run to cross within a six inning outing where she gave up seven hits, walked one and fanned eight. 
  • Barbour took the loss for the Pilgrims as she surrendered 12 runs (five earned) in six innings on 16 hits, two walks and two strikeouts. 


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gallagher batted a grounder to second in the bottom of the second and brought in Helmedach for New England College's first and only run. 
  • Eddleston was able to work around an error and a pair of singles in the bottom of the third and came out of the inning unscathed and the lead still 1-0. 
  • Barbour and Eddleston embarked in a pitcher's duel over the next three frames until Emerson blew the game open with a 12 run sixth inning that saw Barbour pitch through the Lions' lineup nearly twice.
  • A wild pitch allowed Lowe to plate the equalizer before Tomich smacked a two-run RBI double that pushed the Lions ahead, 3-1. 
  • Gearin, Lowe and senior Molly Goldstein (Ridgefield, Conn.) knocked in the next four Lions' runs on three consecutive singles followed by Lowe crossing home the ninth run on another wild pitch.
  • With two outs in the sixth and runners on first and second, Tomich belted a two-run bomb into center to ice Emerson's 12-1 win. 

 

 

GAME TWO: Emerson 9, New England College 6

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

IN THE BOX 

  • Senior Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.), Gearin and junior Alena Jones (Woodinville. Vir.) collected two hits apiece with both Leonardos and Tomich picking up two RBIs with one homer each. 
  • Alexa Scriber completed the day going 2-for-4 with one run scored and Christine McNeil brought in three RBIs for New England College. 


ON THE MOUND 

  • Eddleston picked up her second win of the day in a two-inning relief appearance where she gave up one hit and struck out two. 
  • Farone pitched a complete game that saw her spread nine runs (four earned) through seven innings on nine hits while she walked three and struck out four. 


HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson tagged Farone with five runs within the second through fourth frames to grab a 5-0 lead over the hosts. 
  • Jones' RBI double into the right center gap counted as the Lions' first run in the second and was bumped up to 3-0 after Leonardos launched a two-run homer over the center field fence. 
  • Another pair of Lions' runs crossed home after sophomore Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.) and Goldstein came around on an error by the center fielder. (5-0). 
  • After five New England College runs plated in the fourth and fifth frames, Emerson's 5-0 lead was diminished and trailed 6-5 after five innings. 
  • Gallagher singled in the first Pilgrims run and was quickly followed up with a three-run shot by McNeil to bring the hosts back within one run (5-4) in the fourth. 
  • The fifth inning saw New England College plate the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Helmedach before Barbour smacked the go-ahead run in on an RBI single. 
  • New England College's lead was short-lived for Emerson answered in the sixth with a homer from the bat of Tomich, her second of the day, with the score knotted at 6-6. 
  • A two bagger from DeFusco, passed ball and an RBI single by Gearin completed a three-run seventh inning and pushed the Lions back on top at 9-6. 
  • After allowing an inning opening infield single, Eddleston settled and retired the Pilgrims on a grounder to second a line out double play to the first baseman. 


UP NEXT 

  • Emerson heads back into NEWMAC play on Friday, April 13 and will host Smith at 3 & 5 p.m. in its Sexual Assault Awareness game. 
  • New England College reenters NAC play on Saturday, April 14 at Husson University in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
